ADVISORS

Dr. Atul Nerkar

Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Allred Distinguished Scholar, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Atul's research focuses on how technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship affect business and corporate strategy. He studies research productivity in organizations and the evolution of technological capabilities in the context of the pharmaceutical, chemical, and optical disc industries.

Dr. Tim Wadkins

Tim has served as Director of Quality Assurance for Victory Brewing Company, Head of Quality for Oskar Blues Brewery, Instructor for the Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast / Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and reviewer/team leader for the US Food and Drug Administration. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University.

Dr. Michael Resnick

A leading geneticist who received his B.S. from Northwestern University at Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, Michael did his postdoctoral work with the Medical Research Council in London and Oak Ridge Laboratories in Tennessee. He has held faculty positions at the University of Rochester, the National Institute for Medical Research in London and has been a Lab Head at NIEHS since 1979. He has authored over 170 peer reviewed papers, 50 reviews and book chapters, holds seven patents, has received “Best Paper of the Year” at NIEHS five times, was awarded “Scientist of the Year” by NIEHS in 2008, and was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012. Michael is currently the head of the Chromosome Stability Group and holds a secondary appointment in the Immunity, Inflammation and Disease Laboratory at NIEHS.

Dr. John Harer

Professor of Mathematics, Duke University
John’s primary research is in the use of geometric, combinatorial, and computational techniques to study a variety of problems in data analysis, shape recognition, image segmentation, tracking, brain imaging, biological networks, and gene expression. He was one of the first mathematicians to apply sophisticated geometric and topological techniques to the analysis of complex data sets. He co-authored a standard text in the field as well as numerous papers and has served as a consultant to companies and the US Department of Defense. He is the principal architect of LEM and other analytical systems for studying the dynamics of biological networks.

Dr. Adam Leman

Adam has over 10 years of working in the fields of yeast and cell cycle biology. He earned his B.S. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Rochester and received his Ph.D. From Drexel University College of Medicine in Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2011. Following his doctoral studies, Adam joined Steven Haase’s lab at Duke University. Adam’s focus on integrated systems biology and quantitative approaches to understanding gene regulatory network in the cell cycle has been extremely successful. He has extended his work to developing new approaches in cell cycle research and to understanding key gene regulatory networks governing other processes. Adam has a fascination with brewing and microbiology which has led to a longstanding interest in fermentation and microbial production methods.
